The New DEAL
FDR's New Deal got many programs passed in hopes that the massive projects and the spending of huge amounts of money would jump start the economy and get the nation out of The Great Depression. The programs FDR created effected every class and they were geared toward creating new jobs and restoring confidence in the banks. To afford all of these new programs, FDR engaged in "deficit spending", which meant that the government was spending more money than it took in. Some who were against FDR's New Deal thought that the government was being wasteful with their money and little was actually being accomplished. In 1932 the nation's debt was $19 billion and by 1939 it was $40 billion! One of the biggest fears of politicians was that Americans were going to become dependent on "gimmes" from the government and that the U.S. was going the become a "handout nation." The reality of the New Deal was that it did not get us out of The Great Depression. The reason we got out of the depression was World War II, in which solved the vast unemployment issue throughout the nation.
